Hello, my name is Crystal Stewart, and I am an AlphaNet Coordinator.
I live in Virginia with my two beautiful children Mckenzie and Logan, my dog “Jezzy” and our two cats “Meisha” and “Rogue.” We are football fanatics and I spend most of my spare time at my children’s sporting events.
I graduated college in 2006 with a major in Information Technology and minor in Business Management. In all my jobs, I have worked very closely with the public. I was given the opportunity through a previous employer to become a Nationally certified Pharmacy Technician. I worked in a retail pharmacy for many years, and thoroughly enjoyed helping those I served each day while creating long lasting relationships.
At the age of 22, I was told I had asthma due to smoking and was given rescue inhalers as needed. In 2018, I noticed a huge decline in my breathing. I was getting short of breath doing simple tasks and I was using my rescue inhaler numerous times a day. One day while walking to my mailbox and back, I felt like I was having a heart attack and couldn’t catch my breath. I was seen in the ER and referred to a pulmonologist because my CT scan showed a lot of damage in my lungs. Even though I was a heavy smoker at the time, my pulmonologist felt there was more going on because of my age. I am fortunate that my pulmonologist was aware of Alpha-1 and decided to test me. A few weeks later I was called in his office and diagnosed with Alpha-1. I am a ZZ.
After being diagnosed, I initially felt defeated. With guidance from my coordinator and support groups, I quickly changed my mindset. I knew I did not want to let this diagnosis control me, I wanted to manage it and use my voice to help others with Alpha-1. I look forward to speaking with other Alphas and together we will learn to manage Alpha-1.
