Traveling to the Alpha-1 Association National Conference?

Here are a few things to remember when traveling with Alpha-1.

  • Discuss your travel plans with your physician. Have the physician write a “To Whom It May Concern” letter explaining your present condition in the event that you need to seek medical care while away from home. It should include a list of current meds and/or oxygen needs.
  • Obtain a written prescription for your oxygen, including flow rate.
  • Have a FEW extra days of all routine medications and make sure to pack them in your carry-on luggage.
  • Keep travel documents readily accessible: plane tickets, boarding passes, passport, ID, medical information, emergency cash, credit cards, and medical insurance cards.
  • When booking your flight, confirm with your airline their policy regarding on-board use of oxygen.
  • Confirm with your oxygen provider one week in advance of your travel that oxygen will be available for you at the airport and at your final destination.
  • Try to avoid illness while traveling. Wash your hands more frequently than normal. Make sure to pack antibacterial wipes/spray to clean surfaces that you come in contact with on your trip.
  • Designate a family contact and/or emergency contact at home and at your final destination. Identify a travel companion if feasible.
  • If you are planning an extended stay and will need your augmentation therapy, arrangements with a home care company will need to be made.
