Hi, my name is Jesse Strickland and I would like to introduce myself as your AlphaNet Patient Services Coordinator.
I live in Portsmouth, Ohio with my wife Pam. I have two children, Brent and Amanda, and three grandchildren, Braxton, Alainnah, Caden and Jaxon.
I was diagnosed with Alpha-1 in May 2008. Prior to my diagnosis, I had asthma, allergies and frequent chest colds. I was told I had emphysema and was sent to a pulmonologist for Alpha-1 testing. My pulmonologist told me that I was an Alpha-1 carrier and put me on steroids. Only after two years of going back and forth with doctors did I finally get put on Prolastin therapy. In May 2011, I started an Alpha-1 support group in Ohio. Because I have the symptoms of an Alpha, I am very mindful of the fact that Alphas need to be aware of their environment and, if possible, make appropriate lifestyle changes. I am a certified personal trainer so when I talk to people I encourage them to exercise and eat well in order to improve their health.
I have compassion for people with Alpha-1 and have learned a lot about the disease in such a short span of time. I am amazed by how supportive people have been. The support system is tremendous. It’s comforting to know that you can reach out to someone for help if you ever need it. Being a part of AlphaNet feels as though you are part of a large extended family — it’s as if you’ve known everyone your entire life.
