Barbara Pusey

Hi, I am Barbara Pusey and I would like to introduce myself. My home is in Fort Collins, Colorado and, between us, my husband and I have six children and eight grandchildren. I was fortunate to sail into my 60’s without much warning that something was physically wrong. But after having one bout of pneumonia after another, I was scanned and told I had emphysema and bronchiectasis. As an RN who had never smoked, I questioned the diagnosis and wondered if there wasn’t something more. A doctor I had worked with for many years discussed it with the radiologist and was told the only other possibility was to take a blood test for Alpha-1. I did take the test and was diagnosed in 2003. Even though I am an RN, I had never heard of Alpha-1 before I took that test. I have been infusing Zemaira since my diagnosis.

I also have a Master’s Degree in Education and have taught nursing as well as established a proprietary school that trained students for medical careers. For many years I managed an urgent care and occupational medicine clinic. After my diagnosis, I began working part-time for AlphaNet in 2004 and, after retiring from my other nursing duties, went fulltime the following year. In my free time I enjoy sailing and snow skiing with my husband, reading and listening to a wide variety of music. I have been pleased that, in spite of Alpha-1, I have been able to maintain my ten-year habit of twice-weekly tap dancing lessons.

I am a very analytical person and I continue seeking information and learning more about Alpha-1 every day. My interaction with other Alphas has been a key part of that learning. Alphas are some of the most positive and upbeat people I’ve ever met – I find them inspiring.
