Hi, my name is Angela Town and I would like to introduce myself as your AlphaNet Patient Services Coordinator.
I live in Guilford, Connecticut with my husband Chris. Before I was actually diagnosed with Alpha-1, I went through ten years of symptoms. I was diagnosed with asthma, allergies, bronchitis and was even tested for heart issues. I eventually switched all my doctors and started fresh with new ones, but, even then, it took about two more years before I was tested. I had two bouts of pneumonia when my doctor looked through my records and immediately sent me for testing in 2006. I was tested for Alpha-1 and found to be a ZZ.
I worked in special education prior to my time here at AlphaNet. My youngest daughter is special needs. When her diagnosis was made, I initially remember feeling so frightened and overwhelmed. Then, I fully involved myself with my daughter’s schooling and testing. I became a strong advocate for my daughter. As a result of all that I learned after my daughter’s diagnosis, I became involved in special education. Being an Alpha, I have learned from my experiences in special education and have found that I can reassure individuals and help make them feel better simply by listening to them, empathizing with them and providing them with useful information.
I have never met an Alpha I didn’t like. I love talking to fellow Alphas because I think it is so uplifting. I find that when I am talking to Alphas, I constantly discover similarities between myself and the individuals I speak with — we all have families, friends and interesting stories to share.
